Always surrounded by characterful and stunningly talented musicians, Nuala tours as Nuala Kennedy Band (UK) with Mike Bryan (guitar) Shona Mooney (violin) and Donald Hay (drums).
Donald Hay - Percussion
Donald plays drums and percussion in NKB. Over the last 25 years Edinburgh's Donald Hay has consistently been one of the most sought after musicians on the Scottish and International folk scenes.
He has worked with Eliza Carthy, (on her Mercury Award nominated ‘Anglicana'), Kate Rusby, Martin Carthy, Kathryn Tickell, Gordon Duncan, Battlefield Band, and The Transatlantic Sessions - performing with Joan Osbourne, Jerry Douglas, Ali Bain, Phil Cunningham, The Poozies, Donal Lunny and Michael McGoldrick.
His official musical partnership with Nuala Kennedy began in 2006 and since then they have performed together on countless stages spanning four continents.
Shona Mooney - Fiddle
Shona joined Nuala Kennedy Band in 2013 and is an amazing Scots fiddler from the Borders region, with her own distinct and beautiful style. She joined the band back in 2013 and tours as part of bigger concerts and festivals when her busy schedule allows.
Shona won the highly coveted BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Award in 2006 and went on to release some stunning solo albums. She is an award-winning composer and a dedicated teacher, completing a Masters in Music with distinction. Shona also plays in a fabulous girl band called The Shee as well as teaching some lucky students. Shona has a wonderful sense of humour, and is a very creative and busy lady.
Mike Bryan - Guitar
Mike Bryan is a skilled guitarist who joined the Nuala Kennedy Band in 2008, although Nuala and he had played together informally for a long time prior to that. Mike is full of ideas, full of life and full of kindness. He has a great groove and a natural feel and appreciation for the tradition, having grown up amid the Feis movement in bonnie Ullapool on Scotland's West Coast. The Feis movement helped to revitalize traditional music for the younger Scottish generation by providing lessons and context in which budding musicians could perform.
Mike is a dedicated teacher, and works to pass his knowledge and enthusiasm on to the next generation. Mike and Nuala recorded a (yet to be officially released) duo album of Scottish traditional tunes for flute and guitar called 'A Wee Selection', available here.
